Who we are

Welcome to Diversity Tree Foundation - a non-profit organization founded by parents of a child with the rare disease Moyamoya. Our mission is to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to create a more accepting and safe future for all children.

Our story began with the diagnosis of our child with Moyamoya, a rare and progressive disease that affects the blood vessels in the brain.

At Diversity Tree Foundation, we believe that every person deserves to be accepted and celebrated for who they are. We understand that diversity is not just about visible differences such as race or ethnicity, but also includes differences in ability, culture, religion, gender, and more. We strive to create a world where all children feel valued and included, regardless of their differences.

Through our work, we aim to provide support, education, and advocacy for families and individuals affected by rare diseases, while also promoting diversity and inclusion in all areas of society. We believe that by working together, we can create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Join us in our mission to promote diversity and inclusion, and help us create a world where all people can thrive.

MoyaMoya

Moyamoya disease is a rare medical condition that affects the blood vessels in the brain. In people with moyamoya disease, the blood vessels in the brain become narrow and blocked, which can reduce blood flow to the brain and cause damage. This can lead to symptoms such as headaches, seizures, difficulty speaking or understanding language, weakness or numbness in the limbs, and problems with vision. Moyamoya disease can occur in both children and adults and can be treated with surgery to improve blood flow to the brain.

Moyamoya disease can increase the risk of stroke. When the blood vessels in the brain become narrow and blocked, blood flow to certain parts of the brain can be reduced, and this can lead to a stroke. A stroke occurs when part of the brain is damaged due to lack of blood flow, and the consequences can be severe and long-lasting.

The consequences of a stroke can vary depending on the severity of the stroke and the part of the brain that is affected. Some common consequences of a stroke can include weakness or paralysis of one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding language, memory problems, changes in behavior or emotions, and difficulty with everyday tasks such as dressing or eating. In some cases, a stroke can be fatal.

Therapy

Therapy after a stroke is extremely important for helping patients recover and regain their independence. Stroke can cause significant physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments, and rehabilitation therapy can help address these challenges and improve overall quality of life.

Physical therapy can help patients improve their strength, coordination, and mobility after a stroke. This can involve exercises to strengthen the affected limbs, as well as activities to improve balance and walking. Occupational therapy can help patients re-learn activities of daily living, such as dressing and grooming, and develop strategies to compensate for any ongoing physical limitations.

Speech therapy can help patients overcome speech and language difficulties caused by stroke, as well as problems with swallowing. Cognitive therapy can help patients improve their memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.

In addition to these physical and cognitive therapies, emotional support is also an important part of stroke recovery. Stroke can cause significant emotional distress, such as depression, anxiety, and grief, and therapy can help patients cope with these feelings and develop strategies to manage their emotions.

Overall, rehabilitation therapy after stroke is essential for helping patients achieve their best possible recovery, regain their independence, and improve their quality of life.
